Confession The sacrement of confession, given by the fount of forgiveness, that is, our LORD and savyior Jesus Christ, seems to be fast becoming a gift that is uncharised. Many in the modern day have not only forgotten it's importances, but seek to destroy it, just as a mouth that is drawn twords the flame, the world is drawn twords the darkness. They say, "I confess to Jesus, I don't have to confess to another, and why should I?" Why should you? Becaues it is written "Confess your sins(not merly to GOD alone) to one another...so that you might be healed"(James 5:16) The next thing they will certainly say is "But only Jesus can forgive sins" As catholics we agree with this, but we have the fullness of truth and understand that us who believe are part of Jesus, connected to his mystical body through the power of the holy spirit, but at the same time still remaining to be ourselves. We also understand that Jesus gave the ability to the apostels, and the apostels only, to forgive and retain sins. For Jesus says to his apostels after his glorious resurrection "Whose sins YOU(how could Jesus be talking about himself here)forgive are forgiven them, whose sins YOU retain are retained"(John 20:23) The apostels were clearly given the ability to forgive sins, and who better to confess to then one who can forgive sins?... The apostles passed there ministry and office on to Bishops, who gave this ability to forgive sins to the priests under them. In the light of forgivness of sins we see how the promise of healing in James 5:16 is forfilled, not only in emotional healing that comes from getting the monkey off your back, so to speak, but in physical and spiritual healing that comes from the forgivness of sin. If the apostels could forgive sins why did they not practise this in the bible? This question usually comes up when talking to most partial Christian sects. I don't know where this question originated from, but it originated from someone who had a clear lack of knowledeg in the scripture, becaues in fact they do. "And to whom you have forgiven any thing, I also. For what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven any thing, for your sakes I have done it in the person of Christ."(2 Corinthians 2:10) Clearly the blessed apostel Paul is practising forgivness here, not only a personal forgivness, but a forgivness in the person of Christ. Paul is not saying here that he is Christ, but representing Christ, through the power of the holy spirit, in the forgivness of sins. He also clearly passes this ability of forgiving sins on to the faithful brothers in Corinthians that he's writing to as he says, "and to whom you have forgiven anything, I (do) also." Just as today in the church the bishops, who are the sucessores of the apostels, pass this ability on to the faithful brothers, or priests, of the churches. Sticking with the 2nd letter to the Corinthians Paul goes on to say "(Christ) entrust(ed) to us the message of reconsilliation."(2 Corinthians 5:19) Then in the very next verse that follows he inacts this ability, authoritatively stating,"Be reconciled to GOD."(2 Corinthians 5:20) So we see not only that Jesus gives the ability to forgive sins/reconcile one to GOD in the bible to the apostels, but we see it being inacted by the apostels in the bible as well. Diving into the church history we also see that from the begging of the Christian church the sacrement of confession was both universally practised and accepted. "In the church you shall acknowledge your transgressions, and you shall not come near for your prayer with an evil conscience."(the Didache 4:14 around 70 A.D.) This verse from the Didache, one of the earliest christian writing, composed in the apostelic era, states that one should not even pray until they acknowledge there sins. Since it would be impossible to acknowledge your sins to GOD without praying, and acknowledging them to youself would not clear your conscience, the only logical solution would be to acknowledge your sins to someone, most likely a bishop or priest, in the church. These words are also almost word for word repeated again in the epistel of the blessed Saint Barnabas. "You shall confess your sins. You shall not go to prayer with an evil conscience. This is the way of light."(Epistel of Barnabus chapter 19 around 74 A.D.) As we jump forword a little bit we see the revered martyr Hippolytus telling us the prayer of a new bishops ordination. "GOD and father of our LORD Jesus Christ...grant this your servant whom you have choosen to the episcopate, to feed your flock and to serve without blame as your high priest...and by the spirit of the high priesthood to have the authority to forgive sins"(St Hippolytus Apostelic Tradition 215 A.D) This quote from Hippolytus shows cystal clearly that the early church believed in the ability of the episcopate(office of the bishop)to forgive sins, as this is the prayer used by the universal(Catholic)church at the time of Hippolytus to ordain bishops. Well we could go on and on from here, and give thousands of quotes from early church fathers on confession, there really is no need. We have established that Jesus gave the ability to the apostels to forgive sins, we have established that the apostels inacted this ability, And we have established that the early church universally practised and accept the sacrment of confession. So I present myself humbly before you begging Please! Whether your in full communion with the church or not, find yourself the nearest Catholic priest and confess.
